Elizabeth II colourful portrait 937 Acrylic on Stretched Canvas 60cm x 50cm x 1.5cm (23.5 inches x 19.5 inches x 0.5 inches)
A very colourful and decorative painting which has captured the Queen's look and title, "we are not amused".
The figured is painted in large single bold strokes with vibrant colours more in the Fauves (French for the wild beasts), style. Emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism.
The portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth has strong contrast of shadows is represented not by skin tone but contracted with pure almost primary colours mixed on the canvas at speed which retained it's vibrant fresh look of colours. The overall effect is of Matisse motifs and figures.
The background cuts into and diffuses the edges of the figure's form, giving a lost and found edge, a trick John Singer Sergeant used a lot.
The overall impression is a much more punchy and lively work of art.
